It takes us several hours to finish processing the scene, but I send Lucas home early so he doesn’t miss his chat. There’s nothing he can accomplish here anyway. Technically I could leave as well, but it makes me feel better to be at the scene, to wait to see if any new information is uncovered. The light fades, giving way to night, and the scene quiets. Slowly the team begins to filter away, and I finally leave the apartment. Several news vans are parked around the parking lot as I head out. My footsteps echo too loudly on the pavement, and I swear I can feel the tension expand in the air as the teams take note of my presence.

A woman in a red dress and with a microphone in hand runs toward me with a camera operator trying to keep up behind her. A sinister smile splits her lips, her red lipstick startlingly bright.

“I’m Libby Langston with WMHT. Did you find a body in that apartment? Evidence of a crime? Is this connected to the recent bodies that have been found around Saranac Lake?” She fires off the questions at me without even taking a breath in between them.

“I’m sorry, but I cannot comment on an ongoing investigation,” I say, the words bubbling up inside of me automatically.

“Is this related to the death of Ellie Gordon or Chloe Williams?” she asks, her words all blurring together.

“Again, I can’t comment,” I say again.

“The public is concerned. The members of this community are concerned for their safety,” she says, trying to guilt me into saying something.

“If the public is concerned, then I recommend that they come forward with any information that might be helpful for law enforcement.” I keep walking toward my Jeep, Libby and her camera operator hot on my trail. As she starts to speak again, I climb inside, shut my door, and lock it. She glowers at me from the other side. But I pull away, leaving them and the scene of the crime behind me.
